Texas Family Law & Domestic Relations

Protecting Parental Rights, Children & Marital Assets under the Texas Family Code

Family law matters are among the most emotionally challenging and legally intricate disputes an individual can face in the Texas legal system. Governed primarily by the Texas Family Code, family jurisprudence balances statutory rules with the discretionary equitable authority of family district court judges. Key issues center around the dissolution of marriage, complex financial divisions, and safeguarding the physical and psychological well-being of minor children.

Texas is a community property state. Under Texas Family Code § 3.002, all property acquired by either spouse during marriage is presumed to be community property subject to a "just and right division" upon divorce, unless proven by clear and convincing evidence to be separate property. In matters affecting the parent-child relationship (SAPCR), Texas courts prioritize the "best interest of the child" standard under § 153.002. Navigating temporary orders hearings, standard possession orders, expanded possession schedules, child support guidelines, protective orders, and mediation requires strategic, compassionate, and unwavering legal counsel.

“I highly recommend Burrows Law Group to anyone seeking a divorce attorney who is not only a skilled legal advocate but also a supportive and trustworthy partner during a challenging life transition. The support received from Lily and Brielle was fantastic, not only did they provide great advise and walk us through the process... it was clear we were not just a number to them! They truly care about their client and tailor the support they provide based on your situation. They exceeded my expectations, and I am grateful for their help in achieving a fair resolution.”

“The representation was very disappointing, my ex-wife who was living with me filed for a divorce based on common law marriage, the judge declared that we are considered married on the year i started to file a joint tax return which my accountant did only for the purpose of saving me money since i was supporting my ex-wife. First they recommended an appeal which would not make sence because i did file a joint taxes so trying to reverse the judge decision based on tax filing they could have done it during the trial not to mention that appeal would have cost me thousands of dollars, second after spending over $40,000 in legal fees in two month my lawyers were reactive they would wait for the opposing counsel to file a motion then they would respond to that motion they were mostly focusing on completing the discovery which was something that would hurt my case and put me in a very week position not to mention would have cost me alot of money on top of maybe spending over couple of hundred thousand dollars in legal fees. At that point i realized that i already lost the battle and i am about to loose a lot of money so i reached out to my kids and asked them to get involve so we can stop the bleeding so we negotiated an agreement myself and my ex-wife and we both signed it and we instructed the lawyers to stop and just file the final divorce decree. On top of this costly and unpleasant stressful experience my legal assistant and the accounting lady both were unfriendly. That summarize my experience with this firm. Next time i will do better job selecting my legal team hoping there is no second time.”

“I had the absolute worst experience with Vanita. I don't know if there are actually attorneys there that are competent, but she was far from it. I could've represented myself better. And I'm literally not exaggerating. She waited so long to turn in our request for temporary orders that my ex-husband's attorney didn't even need to look at it. They submitted their request, and I had 30 minutes to sign or I would have to go to court the next day, unprepared. The number of hours I was charged for her to type up a worthless document is truly sad. She emailed me asking me to look over the temporary orders to make sure I agree with them, and then to sign them. Well, there were things that I wanted to change. She insisted over and over again that no changes could be made to the temporary orders. This is absolutely not true. First of all, what sense does it make to ask someone to look over something that they can't change? Second of all, I now have a competent attorney who has changed four things to my benefit on the temporary orders. Even my ex-husband could not believe how horrible she was. He literally felt bad for me.nnAfter I signed and submitted the temporary orders, at some point in the next few days, I received an automatically generated email that requested me to pay into my trust. I knew that I was not about to continue to pay her. I did, however, email the Office to make sure they received the temporary orders, and it was confirmed. They didn't bother to mention that because I had not paid into the trust, they couldn't simply hit forward on the temporary orders and then hit send. My new attorney could not believe that they did not tell me that they were not going to send the Temporary orders without payment. I would have gladly done it myself if I had known. Because of her not communicating that, I literally almost missed a court date that was assigned in the event that temporary orders were not signed they both parties.nnI sent an email, including all of this, among other things, asking for a refund for the $5000 that I wasted. I was told that a group of their attorneys met, and they listed excuse after excuse to dismiss the awful legal service that I received. I was offered $0 back, even after I literally almost missed a court date because she couldn't hit send without 5000 more dollars. Because the request for payment came after they requested my signature, I had absolutely no idea that she would not send the document to my ex-husband's attorney. It is absolutely unethical to confirm a document is received without letting the client know that it would not be sent, especially since we have communication back-and-forth about it without that being mentioned. Unethical!nnBottom line, Vanita typed up some words on a document that was worthless and it cost me $5000. I would absolutely elsewhere. It's not worth the risk.”
