Texas Family Law & Domestic Relations

Protecting Parental Rights, Children & Marital Assets under the Texas Family Code

Family law matters are among the most emotionally challenging and legally intricate disputes an individual can face in the Texas legal system. Governed primarily by the Texas Family Code, family jurisprudence balances statutory rules with the discretionary equitable authority of family district court judges. Key issues center around the dissolution of marriage, complex financial divisions, and safeguarding the physical and psychological well-being of minor children.

Texas is a community property state. Under Texas Family Code § 3.002, all property acquired by either spouse during marriage is presumed to be community property subject to a "just and right division" upon divorce, unless proven by clear and convincing evidence to be separate property. In matters affecting the parent-child relationship (SAPCR), Texas courts prioritize the "best interest of the child" standard under § 153.002. Navigating temporary orders hearings, standard possession orders, expanded possession schedules, child support guidelines, protective orders, and mediation requires strategic, compassionate, and unwavering legal counsel.

Key Legal Matters & Services in Family Law

High-Asset & Complex Property Division

Tracing separate property, valuation of closely-held businesses, retirement accounts (QDROs), stock options, real estate portfolios, and resolving marital debt allocation.

“While I am sure she does a good job I disnt have the beat experience. I explained to her my case and she ended up making it seem like it was so urgent and was going to be hard even told me I could lose custody of my son due to the interrogation questions/discovery. She wanted $15,000 up front as a retainer. Which is extremely excessive. I tried to get her to come down hut she would not. She did say I could pay $10k and $500/month so she was somewhat reasonable but it was just too much. I went to another attorney with a free consultation mind you, and my case got settled in a week so nothing she said was going to happen, happened. I only had to pay them $3k and I got majority of it back. She was very nice to speak with but I just think she increases the urgency so that you have to pay more. Maybe its a worst case scenario type of structure but it ended up not being anything she said. If she had looked at the case as well she would've seen that the interrogatories were not even filed correctly and didn't even count in my case so the urgency again just was not needed.nnUpdate 4/27nI recently had a follow-up phone call with Ms. House regarding my original review, and I am updating this to reflect my full experience.nnMy review was based on a consultation, and that is still a valid experience to share. I am not questioning her demeanor--she was polite during our interaction--but my concerns remain the same, particularly regarding cost transparency and how information was communicated to me.nnDuring our initial call, I explained that I had received interrogatory questions. During that conversation, I was told multiple times that I could lose custody of my son if I did not respond. That was not presented as a general risk--it was communicated in a way that created a strong and immediate sense of urgency. I was also told that this is a tactic her firm uses to catch people off guard, especially when they are filing pro se. That context is important, because it directly influenced how I understood the situation at the time.nnAfter retaining a different attorney, I learned that the documents in question were not filed correctly. Although we still chose to respond, the situation was not as urgent as it had been presented, and my case was resolved shortly after.nnI also previously acknowledged that she was willing to reduce her retainer from $15,000 to $10,000. However, that is still a significant upfront cost, and it was the primary reason I chose not to move forward, as I had initially filed on my own due to financial constraints.nnWhat prompted this update is that I was contacted and asked to modify or remove my review. I do not agree with that approach. Clients should be able to share their experiences--whether from a consultation or full representation--without being contacted and asked to change their feedback.nnFor that reason, I am standing by my original review. This update is to provide additional context so others can make informed decisions based on my experience.”

Response from Office:

Thank you for taking the time to share this detailed feedback -- I'm sorry the consultation left you feeling pressured and concerned about cost. When we discuss family law matters we sometimes outline worst-case scenarios so clients understand potential risks, but I regret that this created undue urgency in your experience. Retainer amounts are based on case complexity and anticipated work, and while we did offer a reduced retainer, I understand that remained unaffordable for you. We respect your right to post your review, will review how our team approached follow-up about it, and will use your comments to improve our communication and transparency.
